She was the third of six children and received her elementary education at District #1 in Clay County. She received her secondary education at Sutton High School, graduating in the class of 1943. She was of the time when prospective educators could take a course called Normal Training and enter the teaching profession. At age sixteen, she began her teaching career at District #23 near Fairfield in Clay County. On June 12, 1949, she was united in marriage to Gilbert (Gip) Zimbelmann. Velma and Gilbert began their marriage on a farm east of Sutton in Fillmore County and later purchased a farm closer to Sutton, which they tended until Gip’s death in 1983. Shortly thereafter, she moved to Sutton. Velma engaged herself in the activities that were normal for a farm wife and mother. After she moved to town, she cooked at the Sutton Sale Barn with her sister Twila, where they commonly baked 37 pies for each Tuesday sale. They also cooked and baked for many farm sales in the area. Velma also cooked at the Skyliner Café in Sutton and the Sutton Community Home. She was very active in the Federated Church teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years. Velma was an active member of Club and the women’s circles at the Federated Church serving on many committees. She served at and called others to serve many funeral luncheons and dinners. She also volunteered at the Sutton schools. Of course, family was at the top of her priority list. She enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren and those were precious moments.
